I'm a Ngugi (Moreton Island) and Kombumerri (Gold Coast) descendant. That's on my dad's side. And I have a non-Indigenous mum. I acknowledge both sides of my heritage and occupy a space somewhere in between those two cultures, relating to all of my family members and environments, and walking in two worlds (which sometimes challenges others because I don't fit into their limited number of cultural identity checkboxes).
I live and work on Yugara/Yuggera and Turrbal Country in Meanjin (Brisbane). I have two sons and an adult step-daughter. I'm cisgendered, and have never experienced what it's like to live with a disability or neurodivergence.
In addition to my qualifications (below), I bring to my work my own lived experiences, and that means I can relate to many of the challenges faced by people who consult me: childhood trauma; drug and alcohol abuse; anxiety; parenting issues; marital separation; redundancy; and relationship issues. My consequent experiences with various mental health modalities and my continued growth all strengthen my practice today.
And...I've created some really positive outcomes for myself too:
- I've been clean and sober for 7.5 years;
- I've had a successful career that has included management, executive and community organisation board roles;
- I've had a few career transitions and, at almost 50, I now know what I want to be when I grow up, and I'm finally doing it...yay!;
- I'm proud of how my ex and I co-parent our kids;
- I'm a valued contributor to multiple communities; and
- I give myself permission to be joyful, and I actively seek pleasure in everything I do.
I'm also an advocate for, and active practitioner of, curiosity, kindness, compassion, and love. I believe in the transformative power of open and honest conversations, and I am passionate about supporting people as they work towards discovering/ finding/ recognising/ reclaiming their preferred ways of living, and in ways that align with their intentions and values.
I'm inspired by collective change work and social justice initiatives based on loving intention and positive, generative action. I am moved by the ever-growing number of soulful, global movements contributing to making the world a better place for EVERYONE in it.
That’s some of my story. I’m looking forward to hearing some of your story and exploring other, maybe less familiar, parts of it too.
My professional counselling and coaching qualifications and registrations:
From my earlier days, I also have a BA (Journalism and Media) and a Master of Information Management (Librarianship).
The art of a good question seems to be the common thread weaving through my many stories.
What's the story with Narrative Practice?
I acknowledge the Yugara/Yuggera and Turrbal Peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which Big Hill & Oyster is based (Meanjin / Brisbane). I pay my respect to their Elders - past, present and future - and I recognise that these lands have been places of healing through yarning and connecting - to ourselves, to each other, to Country - for thousands of years.
